Travel Notes - Isla Mujeres : Mexico

Why Isla Mujeres?
To me, Isla Mujeres is the small little picturesque island with little perfect sandy beaches and clear blue water, far away from civilization yet so annoyingly close to it.The area around the pier is so crowded, yet, as you move inwards you can find with ease, a lonely spot on the beach and park yourselves down in the shade of swaying palm trees.Your choice. Isla Mujeres translates to 'Island of women' in English and is just 5 miles long and about 0.5 miles wide.Being just 8 miles away from Cancun, you can almost always see 'big-brother' Cancun on the horizon. |

Getting there
By air: Nearest airport - Cancun.
By boat:I took the Ultramar Catamaran from the Puerto Juarez jetty of Cancun. The rides start at 5:30 am until mid night and there is one every half an hour. The ride costs 70 pesos round trip for adults and kids under 1.20 mts ride free. The ride lasts about 20 mins point to point. |
Facilities
There are several good restaurants on the Isla.A couple of them are right on the jetty. But as you move inwards towards the beach you will find some small local sea food restaurants along the street. Also some great eat's like La Palapa del Huinic,Casa O's,Caribbean Cafe etc. There are several stalls selling cool coco water and other knick-knacks.Do not forget to buy the starfish shells available in all shapes and colors. It makes for a nice souvenir which will remind you of the Isla from time to time.An easy way to get around the island is by mopeds, bikes or golf carts which are available in plenty on rent. |

Things to do
To see some incredible natural reef formations visit the Garaffon Reef Park. Facilities are similar to Xel-ha and its a great way to spend a day if you have the time. At the south tip of the island is the Mayan Temple and Lighthouse. The temple is dedicated to Moon godess Ixchel and is sort of a pilgrimage spot for local women. The lighthouse offers some incredible views of the island so if you are going there tip the keeper and he will let you climb to the top. |
More Things to do
Hacienda Mundaca, built by the 'pirate' Fermin Mundaca is a sight to see.It was built around 1858 and so most of the grandeur and beauty is gone but it is slowly being restored.Entrance is 10 pesos and worth the visit if you are interested in Haciendas.Well, if you didnt know, Haciendas have a cult of their own in Mexico. The legend of Hacienda Mundaca is worth listening to. The Giant sea turtle farm is another attraction which you can visit if interested.Entrance is 30 pesos. Isla Mujeres is particularly famous for its massages and there are several therapists available should you wish to indulge in a relaxing body-rub. |
